Word Count and Story Classification

A while ago I was wondering what my writings would be considered, Short Stories, Novellas, or Novels. So I did some research, and came up with approximate word counts for various types. So I now bring them here to you for easy access. They are arranged from shortest to longest, though you probably could have figured that out for yourself.

Flash Fiction (up to 1000 words)

Short Short Story (1,000 – 4,000)

Long Short Story (4,000 – 7,500)

Novelette (7,500 -17,500)

Novella (17,500 – 40,000)

Novel (40,000 and up)

-However, if you are participating in NaNoWriMo, your novel must be at least 50,000 words. (I will post about NaNoWriMo at a later time)

Epics and Sequels (110,000 words and above)

I hoped this helped you all out, and I’ll see you next time!
